Rulings on fasting
Its rules are as follows :
- Fasting is the name of abstaining from eating, drinking and associating with one's wife with the intention of gaining nearness to Allah.
- Fasting in Ramadan is obligatory and it is the fourth pillar of Islam.
- It is obligatory on every sane adult (male and female) and every Muslim who has the power to fast.
- The time of fasting is from dawn to sunset.
Conditions for making fasting obligatory
There are four conditions for fasting in Ramadan :
- Being a Muslim (fasting is not obligatory on a kaafir unless he converts to Islam).
- Being sane (fasting is not obligatory on a madman until he regains his sanity).
- Becoming an adult (fasting is not obligatory on a child until he becomes an adult. Yes, if he has the strength to fast, he can be kept in the habit).
